Teenage Girls’ Mental Health
and Wellbeing
In several international surveys, England is ranked last or second-to-last for children’s self-confidence and wellbeing, with girls’ confidence being significantly lower than that of boys. Teens aged 16 show the greatest signs of need. The wellbeing gender gap shows the need to boost female happiness and confidence about appearance, two areas in which they lag behind boys. Children’s Society Good Childhood Report (2016):
- 1 in 7 (14%) Girls aged 10 to 15 are unhappy with their lives (11% of Boys)
- 1 in 3 (34%) Girls are unhappy with their appearance (20% of Boys)
